«A quick look back at Rosa’s little story
The title of the work comes from the anecdote that, during their years of living together, Riopelle called Mitchell his “Rosa Malheur”, referring to Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), a virtuoso of animal painting. Rosa is also the first name of a German Communist Party activist, famous for her coded prison letters, namely Rosa Luxemburg.
The huge colorful fresco, made with the help of aerosol cans, is presented as a succession of animal paintings, inhabited by common objects represented most often in silhouette, favoring atmospheric effects according to a celestial mechanics.”
